The Town of Sellersburg is proud to announce we were selected to receive INDOT’s Community Crossing Matching Grant for $853,685.48! This grant will cover 75% of the costs associated with repaving 26 roadways within the Town.

“Once again, Team Sellersburg is excited and appreciative of INDOT in selecting us as a CCMG Community,” Brad Amos, Council President said. “We get to continue improving the Town of Sellersburg roads and this takes us one step closer to touching every town road!”

Over the last 4 years, the Town of Sellersburg has used the Community Crossings Match Grant Program to do approximately $5,000,000 worth of roadway improvements.  

Since its inception in 2016, the Community Crossing Initiative has provided more than $1 billion in state matching funds for local construction projects. “Community Crossings is one of the most important tools available to our local partners to support their efforts to improve local roads and bridges,” INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness said. “Rebuilding and improving local roads, while also addressing safety needs, promotes growth and enhances the business environment and quality of place across Indiana.”

To qualify for funding, local governments must provide local matching funds from a funding source approved for road and bridge construction. The Town of Sellersburg is a 25 percent community. Communities must also submit an INDOT-approved asset management plan for maintaining existing roads and bridges.

The roadwork associated with this grant will be completed during the 2024 paving season.

Unfortunately, the former Sellersburg State Bank and former Police Station Building has lots of issues including structural, water damage, mold, lead paint, and asbestos. As a result, the Council decided it best to demolish the structure. As much as possible of the original limestone façade is going to be saved as well as the old bank vault door.

The hope is to build a new town hall in the near future on the site and incorporate the saved materials into the new building. The design inspiration for the new building will be the old Sellersburg Elementary School building located on New Albany St.

This was topic was discussed at multiple council meetings since the Sellersburg Police Department moved out. The demolition project was publicly bid and awarded at the October 16, 2023 Town Council Meeting. It was also featured in the News & Tribune on September 21^st: Sellersburg looking to demolish old police station | News | newsandtribune.com. Prior to any bid documents being created, there was a walk through with the Southern Regional Office of Indiana Landmarks to ensure there were no other items of historical value other than the limestone and bank vault door that needed to be saved.

As part of the bid, all asbestos and lead paint has to be remediated prior to demo in accordance with the law. In addition to the as much limestone as possible and the bank door being saved, we are going to save the AC units on the roof as well as the backup electrical generation system on the building. We will also be preserving the flagpole. The hope is to be able to reuse them as well.

There is not a timeframe for a new Town Hall at this time. Until a decision is made regarding the future of the site, the area will be a green space upon completion of the demolition. However, should it formally be decided to build a new Town Hall, the new building would house everything except the police in one building instead of the two buildings we currently have. It would also have the storage space needed to keep all records of the town and billing office where currently we struggle to house it all. It would also need an enlarge the council room and added space for offices for redevelopment, parks, legal, and engineering. The goal would be to make it an all-inclusive community building that is better suited for the needs of the town residents, not just for now, but for 20-30-40+ years from now. There would also be a community room that could be reserved for various purposes.

Whenever a new Town Hall happens, the two current buildings that serve as the town offices would be repurposed for community use or demolished to make way for future business space or additional outdoor park space. Reinvesting in the original Downtown Sellersburg is a top priority of the Council.

  

4:50pm 10/19/23:

The Precautionary Boil Water Advisory issued to Sellersburg Water Customers south of the Sellersburg Water Plant on Holmans Lane in Jeffersonville (see attached map) on 10/18/23 is now lifted.

As a standard, Sellersburg Water opts to issue 48 Hour Precautionary Boil Advisories to give ample time to submit retesting to the third-party testing facility if needed. This advisory is being lifted before 48 hours because third-party testing results have confirmed the safety of the water supply in your area after the loss of pressure on 10/18/23.

The Precautionary Boil Advisory was issued after loss of pressure on 10/18/23 due to a valve failure during scheduled maintenance of the system as part of the replacement of fire hydrants within the Indian Hills neighborhood.

7:00pm Update: Water has been on since around 5:45pm. Crews are out flushing hydrants to remove air from the mains. Pressure fluctuations may be experienced as we continue to work through the system.

5pm Update: Water service is currently being restored to the impacted area and will fully be on by 6pm 10/18/23. Impacted users will be on a 48 precautionary boil advisory once service is restored. Please run your cold water taps for a few minutes at your location to flush any air that may be in your service lines.

ALERT: While preforming scheduled maintenance on a valve located on Allison Ln. at Seminole Dr., the valve failed. Due to the location of this valve, the only way to repair this failure is to shut water service off to the Jeffersonville Customers of Sellersburg Water located south of the water plant on Holmans Ln. immediately.  

Sellersburg Water Customers south of the Sellersburg Water Plant on Holmans Lane in Jeffersonville (see attached map) will be without water for a couple of hours Wednesday, October 18, 2023. Fall Season Weekly Yard Waste Collection to start the week of October 16th, 2023.

The Town provides leaf pickup on a weekly basis, beginning around mid- October. Leaves must be placed in paper bags and placed at the curb. There is no limit to this service, but we encourage mulching or composting leaves, if possible. Please note, open burning in the Town of Sellersburg is NOT permitted.

For normal yard waste items: Limbs should be bundled in 4-5 ft. lengths tied securely with baling string or cord. There is a limit of Two (2) bundles per pickup up with a diameter of the branches being no larger than 3 inches. These may be placed at the curb with the cut end toward the street. Other vegetative material can either be placed in two (2) 32-gallon cans, clearly marked YARD WASTE on the side of the cans or biodegradable paper yard waste bags.

Please do not intentionally blow your fallen leaves into the street. The street sweeper is designed to clean up leaves that have fallen into the roadway as part of normal road debris. While we do street sweeping, it is not intended for your yard waste. The street sweeper is designed to clean up leaves that have fallen into the roadway and normal road debris. Large amounts of leaves clog the vacuum system of the sweeper truck and clog storm drains that will lead to flooding.

In addition, leaves intentionally blown into the limits of any street, sidewalk, alley, or public way is considered littering in the Town of Sellersburg and enforced by the Sellersburg Police Department per Town Code:

Trick-or-Treating within the Town of Sellersburg is on October 31st (Halloween) from 6-9pm.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Walk Safely

1. Cross the street at corners. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. 
2. Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
3. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
4. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.  Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
5. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
6. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Costumes for a Safe Halloween

1. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. 
4. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. 

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween

1. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
2. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
3. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
4. Get rid of any distractions – like your phone – in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
5. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

People often opt to move to the suburbs for myriad reasons – space, affordability, schools, employment and sometimes to seek safety. Violent and nonviolent crime rates, roadway safety, and drug and alcohol abuse within a community can affect the quality of life for an individual and family alike.

With this in mind, SmartAsset set out to determine which U.S. suburbs are safest. We analyzed safety data for 370 suburbs of the 100 largest cities – and also compared the affordability of the safest areas.

Data and Methodology

To find the safest suburbs, SmartAsset compared data for 370 places that are within 15 to 45 minutes of the 100 largest U.S. cities by car, that have at least 5,000 residents, by the following metrics:

• Violent crime rate. The number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Data comes from the FBI’s 2021 Uniform Crime Reporting Database; missing crime data was supplemented by NeighborhoodScout.com
• Property crime rate. The number of property crimes per 100,000 residents. Data comes from the FBI’s 2021 Uniform Crime Reporting Database; missing crime data was supplemented by NeighborhoodScout.com
• Vehicular mortality rate. The number of deaths due to traffic accidents per 100,000 residents. Data is from the 2022 County Health Rankings.
• Drug poisoning mortality rate. The number of drug poisoning deaths per 100,000 residents. Data is from the 2022 County Health Rankings.
• Percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking. The percentage of adults who consumed more than four drinks of alcohol for women or five drinks of alcohol for men on a single occasion over a 30-day period, or who engage in heavy drinking, which is defined as drinking more than one drink per day for women or two drinks a day for men on average. Data is from the 2022 County Health Rankings.

The vehicular mortality rate, drug poisoning mortality rate and percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking are all measured at the county level. Both violent and property crime rates are at the city level.

Constitution Day, is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is normally observed on September 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.

St. Joe Road East Closed Saturday, September 2nd from 6am-approx. 6pm for an under-the-road pipe replacement.

If you access SR-60 using St. Joe Rd. East, please note this one-day traffic impact.

As part of the annual paving project, there will be some traffic detours residents need to be aware of. Both of these are one day closures.

On July 17th, Dreyer Ln. will be closed at Utica St. for a pipe repair/replacement. To detour around the project, use E. St. Joe to/from SR60 or E. St. Joe to US 31 through Speed.
