Information Regarding US-31 INDOT Project

On September 15, 2022 INDOT hosted a public information meeting regarding the upcoming US-31 Project scheduled to begin in summer of 2023.

For those wishing to know more about the project, all information can be found at this link:

You can also stop by Town Hall to view maps of the project.

If you have additional questions regarding this project, please visit INDOT4U.com

Camp Run Parkway, American Way, and the Town Center District

From the 2040 Comprehensive Plan: “The area north of CR 311 at Camp Run Parkway is targeted for a new town center that would allow multiple uses, improve connectivity, define the community’s character, and create a destination within Sellersburg. The town is planning an extension of Camp Run Parkway that would connect CR 311 to IN 60 at Poindexter Lane…”

“The town center has the opportunity to define the character and create a distinct image for Sellersburg. Design standards should be used to direct development in terms of building materials, building orientation, setbacks, height, lighting, signage, landscaping, parking, and pedestrian amenities.”

In early 2022, through the Redevelopment Commission, the Town broke ground on the Camp Run/American Way project. A $4.5M road project to connect SR60 and CO 311 through the Town Center District. Together with INDOT funding the $2.5M intersection improvement on SR60, this area will be the focus for attracting new business and entertainment for the residents of Sellersburg and surrounding communities.

Town Center District (TCD) is not a place, it is an idea. It is a concept of design standards for attracting a certain type of investment. The TCD has upgraded architectural standards along with public spaces featuring buildings at sidewalk, on-street/rear parking, pedestrian amenities, buildings oriented towards the street. This image is a representation of the future vision for the TCD.

Below is a news story from 9/2/2022 featured on WRDB News.

SELLERSBURG, Ind. (WDRB) — Officials in Sellersburg hope a massive project under construction that will connect Highway 60 to Highway 311 helps the town realize its vision of attracting people to visit, work, play and live.

Camp Run Parkway, right off of Highway 60, has been called the “road to nowhere.” But now, it’s on its way to becoming a road to better places.

American Way, which is the name of the new road that will connect Highway 60 and Highway 311, features the newly paved road, sidewalks and a large roundabout at the turn. It’s a $4.5 million project that’s funded by a private donor.

While the road appears close to being finished, it won’t completely open until the Indiana Department of Transportation installs a $2.4 million stoplight at the entrance of American Way at Highway 60.

“A lot of people are going to try to think that this is going to be a cut through,” Sellersburg Town Council President Brad Amos said. “It’s not necessarily our desire. Our desires are for people who want to come in here and shop and work and enjoy their family times.”

Due to Sellersburg’s lack of a main street area, the town created American Way with intentions of it becoming a town center district.

“This will be the area we expect people to come to if they want to walk with their kids, if they want to bicycle through here, if they want to come in and visit boutiques or small businesses along the way,” Councilman Terry Langford said.

Visions for the area include boutiques, shops, restaurants and other small businesses.

“We don’t want a bulging business industrial back in here,” Langford said. “We want to keep it down. We want a Main Street USA-type feel.”

Town officials expect the road to open sometime next spring, and they believe businesses will follow soon after.

The project is keeping up with its town’s growth.

“I think, at the end of the day, everybody will see the exciting things we have in mind,” Amos said.

Regarding Speed Park…

2/1/24: It has come to our attention Speed Park has been officially put up for sale. Since 2022, many discussions were held. Unfortunately, there were no able partied entities who were willing to own, maintain, and accept liability for the park. In 2023, Silver Creek School Corp. did make an offer to the owner however, that deal fell through.

While the Town cannot own the park due to being well outside of our municipal limits, the Town does provide sewer services to that area. Currently, there is not capacity within our sewer collections system for that area to add additional users. This includes the entirety of the property known as Speed Park.

8/8/22: As many have heard, Lehigh Hanson Aggregates (locally known as Essroc in Speed) will be moving most of their operations to Mitchell, Indiana. As part of this relocation, they are working internally to sell some of their local landholdings. We have been told by representatives of Lehigh Hanson that Speed Park and Speed Golf Course are NOT part of the “to be sold” conversations.

The Town has been in conversations with Lehigh Hanson regarding the future of Speed Park. To dispel any rumors, the Park has NOT been sold and will not be apartments, townhomes, houses, business, etc. Lehigh Hanson has committed to the Town they have no plans to sell it to developers and is interested in working with the Town to find a solution to ensure Speed Park remains a park for future generations to enjoy.

The challenge the Town now faces is that Speed Park is not located within the Town Limits of the Town of Sellersburg nor is there a way to annex it into the Town due to its distance from our municipal border. Speed Park, like the Speed community, falls within unincorporated Clark County. While the Town is interested in and has been working with Lehigh Hanson to preserve Speed Park, the Town of Sellersburg cannot own the park within our parks system due to being outside our limits.

Clark County Government does not currently have a Parks Department nor own any property that is classified as parks and recreations. However, the Town is working with the County and the Silver Creek Township Trustee on ideas centered around who could own the Park and how/who could/would maintain it.

The Sellersburg Town Council places great importance on the preservation of Speed Park. While outside of our Town limits, everyone agrees Speed Park is a Sellersburg Community Asset that is worth saving. The Town Manager at the direction of the Council will continue to work with Lehigh Hanson and our community partners until a solution is found that results in the long-term preservation of Speed Park.

Sellersburg Pool Update

While the official final day for normal swimming is 7/31/22, there will be a BONUS Saturday August 6th from 2-6pm. We would like to stay open long into the season, we do not have enough available life guards to cover an extended season past schools going back into session. The Annual Pooch Plunge is scheduled for August 14th from 2-4pm.

As previously announced, the Town was to begin an improvement project at Mosley Park with help from the Federal Land and Water Conservation (FLWC) Grant. Originally planned to begin by the end of August; the project included ADA improvements, the addition of a splash pad play area, a new basketball court, a playground, and parking improvements. Unfortunately, the lowest bid for the project came in $400,000 over budget due to costs being driven up by material/labor shortages and unprecedented inflation from the time of the grant approval to the time of bidding.

The Parks Board and Town Council are currently working to review the bid tabulations to re-scope and re-bid to move this project forward. All of this is being done while staying within the requirements of the FLWC Grant and what is available within the Parks Board’s budget. Once a decision is made, there will be an update to this post as it relates to the Mosley Park improvements.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work to improve this community asset and continue to reinvest into our Town!

REMINDER: Be on the lookout for NO PARKING signs as paving work continues…

Paving crews will begin working through some Town streets the next few weeks, milling and paving.

Milling is scheduled to begin May16th with paving scheduled to begin soon after.

  • Popp Avenue from US-31 to Utica Street
  • Broadway from US-31 to Utica Street
  • S. Fern from US-31 to Utica Street
  • Dold Avenue from Fern to Broadway

Please watch out for NO PARKING signs along the paving routes. Signs are marked with approximate dates for work to happen. During these times, residents are asked not to park on the street to allow crews to swiftly work through your area. If you need somewhere to park temporarily, please use the parking Town Public Park Lot located at the corner of New Albany and Utica Street during the time crews are working.

In the event a vehicle is not moved, every effort will be made to contact the owner by the contactor and the Town of Sellersburg. If vehicles are not relocated and we are not able to get in contact with the owner, there will be no choice but to tow vehicles out of the roadway so crews so paving work can continue.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and patience during these improvement projects!

Sellersburg Water Hydrant Flushing April 18th – 29th

April 18th – 22nd from Sellersburg Water Plant (located on Holmans Ln in Jeffersonville) north through the Town of Sellersburg and surrounding areas.

April 25th – 29th from Sellersburg Water Plant (located on Holmans Ln in Jeffersonville) south through the Jeffersonville service area.

Twice a year, Sellersburg Water flushes the pipes in its water distribution system. This is an essential part of our system maintenance program, which helps us to continue to provide you with high-quality water service. Although a regular part of our water distribution system, we do receive questions from time to time about why we flush. Because hydrant flushing is an important benefit, we’d like to tell you about it.

WHY FLUSHING IS IMPORTANT

Flushing our system helps to clean out any build up of mineral deposits and sediment inside the pipes. These deposits can occur when there is a reduced water demand. We also flush our hydrants to confirm they are operational and to check fire flows in our system.

HOW WE FLUSH OUR PIPELINES

Flushing involves simultaneously opening fire hydrants in a specific area to create increased water flows. When our crews are on your street or nearby, this process usually takes about one hour.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When crews are in your area, you may notice a drop in water pressure or discolored water. Discolored water may occur, because the sediment in water mains get stirred up when the fire hydrants are used and when the flow of water in mains is changed. This is normal. If this happens, it is not harmful. Simply let your water run until it is clear.

WHAT TO DO TO PREPARE FOR FLUSHING

  • Draw water for cooking ahead of time.
  • Store a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking.
  • Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher.

ADDITIONAL CUSTOMER TIPS

  • Avoid running your tap water and using the washing machine or dishwasher while crews are flushing in your area.
  • If discolored water occurs, simply run the cold water for a few minutes until it clear. This will allow the sediment to work its way through your pipes.
  • Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap before doing laundry or running the dishwasher. NOTE: If your laundry becomes stained, DO NOT PUT YOUR LAUNDRY IN THE DRYER. Rewash clothes immediately using detergent and add a rust remover. Most rust removers can also be used on stained fixtures.

In some cases, slight discoloration might linger for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and does not affect water quality. No health hazards are associated with discolored water from hydrant flushing. If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
